Baseball sweeps East Central
By Greydon Buhlig
SWOSU Baseball hosted the Tigers of East Central this weekend. Both days started off slow as the Dawgs got down early, but their bats were able to pick up the slack.
On Friday, it was 17 hits and 3 home runs that fueled the scoring in game one. Miguel Soto, Keyshaun Smith, and Zach Baxley each hit a home run in the game. Nate Postlethwait ended the game with 9 strikeouts, and 5 earned runs. Haden Branch came in with 3 innings remaining and finished the game with 7 strikeouts and the save. The Bulldogs won 12-6 in game one.
Game two started the same way as ECU jumped out to an early 5-run lead. It wasn’t until the bottom of the 4th that the Dawgs’ bats woke up and Baxley got the scoring going, coming home off an RBI from Brooks Red. The Dawgs would only allow 2 more runs from the Tigers and score 4 of their own, capped off on a walk as Brayden Whitchurch crossed the plate. That gave SWOSU a 3-run lead and Ryan Hildner would get his third win on the year. He ended with 6 strikeouts.
In game three, the Tigers once again jumped out to an early lead, and the Dawgs climbed back in it. Vance Ferraro, who started the game for Southwestern, went 4 innings with 7 strikeouts and only walked 2. The bats were hot all weekend and SWOSU held out ECU for a 13-10 win as Keyshaun Smith hit 2 more home runs in that game to seal the deal.
SWOSU takes on the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Tuesday, Apr. 6, at 3 p.m. in Weatherford, Okla.
