Bulldogs drop tough game to OBU, 84-78

The SWOSU Men’s Basketball team looked to bounce back after an overtime loss to Southern Nazarene on Thursday night with a win against Oklahoma Baptist. The Dawgs started off hot with Tauriawn Knight hitting 2 3’s and getting a 15-footer to go and taking an early 8-2 lead. OBU would stick around and get within 1-point with a Harrison Staddart jumper. The Dawgs would still lead with 7:15 to go.
With 3:30 remaining in the half, Damion Thornton hit 2 free throws to give the Bulldogs a 5-point lead at 34-29. The Bison fought back with big buckets from Brantley Thompson and Stoddart and the game was tied 38-38 at the half.
The Bison started the 2nd half hitting 3 quick buckets and taking a 43-41 lead. Chris Braggs would get a layup and the foul to tie it up but miss the free throw and OBU would regain a 51-46 lead with 15:49 remaining in the game. Strong inside play from Chris Braggs would keep the Dawgs within 3-points with just under 12-minutes in the ball game, 60-57.
Free throws and solid defense were what kept SWOSU in a close ball game. Finding themselves down 7, the Dawgs got to the free throw line often to fight back and tie it up with 7:16 remaining. Back-to-back 3’s from Thompson and Trey Green gave the Bison a 6-point lead with 3:39 to go. A tough layup by Braggs gave the Dawgs a 1-point lead, but OBU was quick to regain the lead. The Bison called a timeout with 1:24 remaining and they led 79-78.
A big 3 from Jarius Hicklen gave the Bison a 5-point lead with 22.1 seconds remaining and the Bison finished the game with free throws to finish the game on a 6-0 run and win it 84-78.
The Bulldogs are set to take on Northwestern Monday evening if weather permits.
