Shawnee, Okla. - The Southwestern Bulldogs took a short trip east to Shawnee and faced the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist to try and avenge their first of two losses on the season.
The game started off quick with Tauriawn Knight getting SWOSU’s first 6-points as the Dawgs took an early lead. OBU’s Jordan Thompson swiftly took control and dropped a deep 3 to take the lead back at the first media timeout. The game would go back and fort after that and SWOSU would regain the lead with 11:06 remaining in the first half.
The game would stay tight as it appeared neither team could find any separation. At the under 8 media timeout, Chris Braggs would miss the first free throw attempt but hit the second and bring the Dawgs back within 1-point. OBU would extend that lead with back-to-back 3’s and take a 7-point lead with 6:38 to go.
Damion Thornton and Knight would carry the offense and do their best to keep it close, but OBU’s Brantley Thompson scored effortlessly and keep OBU in front by 4 with 2:29 left in the 1st half. The Dawgs would continue to stay within striking distance but couldn’t tie the ballgame and trailed by 2 heading into halftime.
The 2nd half began with OBU jumping out to a 4-point lead, but the Bulldogs fought back to take a 47-46 lead at the 16:43 mark. Braggs would really push the envelope with strong inside play, bullying his way to the free throw line, but the game would continue to flip leads. At the 13:15 mark, there were 13 lead changes with 8 ties. A big 3 from Livingston Cleare gave SWOSU the lead with 7:09 to go in the game.
Back-to-back turnovers with just under 5-minutes to go, OBU was able to regain a 3-point lead with a step-back 3 from Brantley Thompson. Then a ridiculous alley-oop off the glass from Jordon Thompson to Nigel Wilcox, that would’ve had a crowd buzzing, secured the Bison lead. Two straight 3’s from OBU’s Harrison Stoddard and Jaquan Simms pushed the lead double digits at 84-74 with 2:35 to go. That would be the final deficit as OBU and SWOSU would trade free throws to a final score of 90-80, Bison over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will head come back home and face Southern Nazarene for the second time this season. They took the win over the Savage Storm 76-69 and will look to win again on Saturday around 4:00 p.m.
