Music therapy, by definition, is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship.
SWOSU’s music therapy program will be hosting their 13th annual Music Therapy Awareness Expo on Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Student Union Grand Ballroom.
The expo will include a drum circle, music therapists and instructors, a discussion of memorable moments, and vocal improvisation. Anyone is allowed to attend, and the event is free to anyone who wishes to participate.
The expo is also a part of the music therapy awareness week. SWOSU has been celebrating the week since 2008. Music therapy awareness week takes place to reinforce music therapy as a profession in Oklahoma and to bring awareness of discipline to the profession, as well as awareness of availability to the community.
Other events of the week include fundraising events every weekday from 9 a.m. to noon. There will also be a movie night on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., and an open mic night at RX Brew on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
The following weekend will have an open house on March 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring SWOSU alumni. The open house is also open to the public, and will have high schoolers from the surrounding area attending from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
