When The Southwestern reported about the arrest of Brandon Woods on Feb. 24 for breaking into Henrietta Mann Hall to take a shower on a female-only floor, SWOSU students were wondering how he was able to get access to the dorm in the first place.

As a matter of fact, since the beginning of Fall Semester 2020, dormitories are only accessible with a key. This should help prevent non-residents from entering the dorms in order to enforce COVID-19 policies that prohibit off-campus visitors from being in the dormitories.

There is one loophole though. It was possible to enter the lobby of Mann Hall without keys by taking the stairs from the lobby of the Alma Mater Merc store that is located on the 2nd floor of the building. Even before the Merc was opened, doors to the lobby were sometimes open due to the renovations. The SWOSU Safety Committee took action.

"[They] chained off the stairs in the Merc lobby that leads to the first-floor entrance at Mann Hall. The doors at the bottom of the stairs have also been chained so there is no entrance or exit there," Brian Adler, Vice President of Public Relations & Marketing, said.

However, Brandon Woods did not use those stairs. He found another way.

Adler: "Video footage showed a resident actually holding the door open for Woods when he entered Mann Hall." It is unclear, however, if the resident was aware of Woods not being a student.

According to Adler, extra patrols by the SWOSU Police Department around the residence halls have been implemented. Also, Chief Kendra Brown has created a new safety video. It will soon be looped on Residence Life monitors and Social Media in order to educate students on personal safety, keeping doors and property secured, and the need to pay attention to their surroundings.

Brandon Woods currently has a warrant due to failure to show up in court.
