The Bulldogs men's basketball team experienced a good start into the new season and won 99-87 against East Central University.
SWOSU started the game off well on the defensive end, snagging 3 steals and jumping out to an early 3-point lead at the first media timeout. At the second break, due to some expected sloppy, fast basketball from both teams, SWOSU’s lead was just 2 points at 22-20.
James, Thronton, and Knight were doing their best to keep the scoring coming. The basketball players from ECU, however, were playing steady, solid on both defense and offense.
Throughout the next 5 minutes, the SWOSU defense stepped up, allowing no offensive boards and grabbing a couple more steals. Thornton grabbed 2 offensive rebounds and Williams showed off his range with a deep 3 pointer just before the timeout.
From the 6-minute mark on, the SWOSU defense was on full display: Playing solid, no fouls, grabbing rebounds, and generally flowing very well. This also fueled the Bulldogs' offense as they jumped out to a 10-point lead. But back to back 3’s from Gerren Jackson of ECU saw that lead swindled down to 6.
SWOSU’s defense held out during a barrage of scoring from East Central, taking a 3-point lead into halftime, 49-46.
ECU came out in the second half firing, even going up by 4 points. But the Dawgs' defense picked up again and led to more takeaways and easy buckets. Thornton continued right where he left off in the first half and scored several buckets inside, continuing to play aggressively.
ECU’s offense struggled as they couldn’t find a rhythm. With about 10 minutes to go, Chris Braggs Jr. had back-to-back huge offensive plays to push the Dawgs lead to 11 points and force an ECU timeout.
The SWOSU defense is what really stood out in this game. For about 7 minutes, the ECU Tigers couldn’t put the ball in the hoop and the Bulldogs continued to do what they wanted to on offense. Damion Thornton sealed the game with about a minute to go as it was tipped down the floor. He scooped it up and threw it down hard. Result: The Bulldogs won 99-87.
Tauriawn Knight led the way scoring for the Dawgs with 25 points and went 7/11 behind the three point line. Thornton had 24 points and did the dirty work grabbing 14 rebounds, 5 of those being offensive boards. ECU was led by Tyler Arnold who had 24 points and 5 rebounds.
The Bulldogs travel back to Weatherford on Saturday to face Southeastern Oklahoma State (4 p.m.).
Thornton: 24 points, 14 rebounds (5 offensive)
Knight: 25 points. 7/11 3pt
Tyler Arnold: 24 points, 5 rebounds
