The Southwestern Men’s team took the short but cold trip east down I-40 to Bethany, Okla. to take on the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene. They looked to grab their 2nd win over SNU on the year. The first half started with SNU catching fire from deep and jumping out to a 6-point lead early. That fire was quickly doused as SWOSU was able to fight back and hold a lead as large as 10-points.
Bralyn James led the way with 9-points for the Dawgs as they took a 39-33 lead going into the half.
The 2nd half saw SNU come out firing again as they were able to come within 1-point, but the Dawgs picked up the pace and took a 50-45 lead with 12:51 to go in the game. Southern Nazarene wouldn’t go away as they climbed back in it with big 3’s and solid defense. With 8:36 to go, SWOSU held just a 3-point lead at 56-53.
The Bulldogs would continue to just stay out of reach, but SNU was within 1 possession with just under a minute to go. Adkiye Iyaye hit a clutch 3 with 3-seconds remaining to tie it up. A last second attempt over 2 SNU defenders didn’t drop for Damion Thornton and they would go into overtime tied up at 67.
Thornton would get overtime going with an and-1 bucket to take a 3-point lead early. SNU stayed within striking distance, getting back within 2 with 2:15 to go. Back-to-back offensive fouls from Williams gave the Crimson Storm the opportunity to tie it up once again with less than a minute to go.
SWOSU would get the ball back down 2 with 10-seconds remaining. Camden Gipson had a layup attempt high off the glass, but it would bounce off the front of the rim and fall into a SNU rebounder to seal the game for the Crimson Storm, 79-78. SWOSU falls to .500 on the year at 6-6.
They are set to take on Oklahoma Baptist at home Saturday at 4 p.m.
