The 2020 College Football Season
Updated: Nov 21
College football has been crazy this year. From not knowing if there would be an season to begin with, to conferences that originally opted out of playing now deciding to play, college football has kept the sports world guessing.. Whether you follow the sport religiously, or casually, you have been wrapped up in the world of college football.
It began with the Big 10 and PAC 12 opting out, while the Big 12, the SEC, and the ACC deciding to carry on with the season. When the Big 10 and PAC 12 decided to opt out, this worried football fans everywhere as it seemed that the other conferences would follow suit. The NCAA came out with their own regulations regarding COVID-19 that caused smaller schools to postpone their seasons. This left it up to the bigger conferences and how they would handle it which would determine the outcome of the 2020 season. Once the decision was made to play, it left the other conferences who decided to opt out, in a bit of a quandary.
The Big 10 players, namely Justin Fields, signed a petition to play. Nebraska even voted to play football and was openly critical of the Big 10’s decision. This led to the Big 10 handing Nebraska the toughest conference schedule. A lot of people agreed, a lot of people disagreed, but the consensus was that if the other power 5 conferences could play, why couldn’t the Big 10?
After a couple months of talking, watching the other teams play, and realizing that they wouldn’t be able to compete for a national championship, the Big 10, and then later, the PAC 12, decided to have a shortened season. This left college football fans excited, but also a little anxious.
The PAC 12, with no real contender for a playoff spot, is having a short 7 game season in November. The Big 10, with 5 teams currently ranked in the top 25, has a couple teams with a shot to get into the playoff come this winter. Ohio State being the most likely, along with Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Penn State. The only downside, none of these teams have played a single game. Oklahoma State, who is currently undefeated at 3-0, is ranked 6th while Ohio State is ranked 5th. Understand that I am not saying these teams aren’t good. Ohio State made it to the playoff a year ago and has been good over the last several years. However, I am just saying that the teams that are playing should get rewarded.
This season has had upsets, surprise teams, and players jump onto the scene who we may have never heard of (such has Hudson Clark of the Arkansas Razorbacks, who had 3 interceptions against Ole Miss). The 2020 has brought a lot of heartache, a lot of headaches, a lot of ups and downs, however, college football helps to take some of that pain away -- unless of course it is your team that loses. All in all, the 2020 college football season will be one to remember… for better or for worse.
