Oklahoma City's World Rogers World Airport has seen a significant increase in passenger demand over the past few years. 4.4 million passengers used the busiest airport in Oklahoma in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But why doesn't the airport offer international air service? According to Mark Kranenburg, Director of the airport, demand is not high enough yet. On the other hand, he also said that there was an airline in the past who wanted to sit down and talk about the possibility of offering international flights from Oklahoma City.
But there was one major obstacle: As of right now, the airport doesn't have a Federal Inspection Services (FIS) facility for U.S. Customs and Border Protection to clear travelers returning from their destination.
The airport expansion project that is currently taking place could change that. In the lower level, space for a FIS is created. The expansion project is set to be completed by summer 2021.
With more and more people getting vaccinated and passenger demand picking up, it is just a matter of time until Will Rogers World Airport can offer international air travel.
Kranenburg: "We will be more ready to say: 'Take a chance on us, we are ready for you.'"
